Post-surgical care form

What needs to be done to ensure a comfortable recovery process after the surgical operations we frequently perform in our clinic, to avoid jeopardizing the success of the treatment, and the situations that may naturally be experienced are stated in the form below.

Ameliyathanede Cerrahlar

A.Wound care

1. Bite the applied gauze for 30 minutes, avoid jaw movements and try not to talk.

2. Do not rinse or spit for the first 24 hours. Mouth rinsing and spitting may cause bleeding and may negatively affect wound healing.

3. Do not try to stretch your lips and cheeks to see the operation area.

4. Do not smoke or drink alcohol for 7 days after the operation.

B. Bleeding

1. It is normal for there to be bleeding in the form of leakage in the surgical area within the first 24 hours.

2. Do not make sucking movements and do not spit to avoid causing bleeding.

3. If bleeding starts again, put a damp gauze on the extraction wound to apply pressure and bite. Continue this process for 30 minutes.

4. Keep your head high. You can use several pillows while sleeping.

C. Discomfort, trouble

1. Some discomfort after surgery is normal. This disorder can be controlled with medications prescribed by your doctor, but it may not be completely eliminated.

D. Diet

1. Do not eat or drink anything until the anesthesia wears off.

2. It is important to drink plenty of fluids. Do not use a straw because it may cause bleeding.

3. Return to your normal eating pattern as soon as possible after surgery. Soft and cold foods such as ice cream and yoghurt are recommended on the first day.

E. Oral care

1. Do not rinse your mouth or brush your teeth for the first 12 hours.

2. After 12 hours, start brushing your teeth, except for the wound area. If a mouthwash has been prescribed by your doctor, use it as directed.

3. The day after the operation, you can start brushing all your teeth, including the wound area, with a soft brush.

F. Swelling

1. It is normal for swelling to occur after surgery. Swelling reaches its maximum level at 48 hours after surgery and usually disappears completely within 4 to 6 days.

2. During the first 48 hours, applying cold externally to the surgical area with an ice pack (applied for 10 minutes and then stopped for 50 minutes) helps reduce swelling and may help make the post-surgical period more comfortable.

3. After the first 48 hours, external heat application to the surgical area (3-4 times a day, 15-20 minutes) will help the swelling to go down more quickly.

G. Rest

1. Avoid excessive talking and strenuous activities for 24 hours after surgery. Jaw movements, increased pulse and blood pressure may cause bleeding.

H. Bruising

1. Slight bruising may occur in the surgical area. For some people, this is a normal situation and there is no need to worry. This bruising will disappear within 7 to 14 days.

I. Hardness

1. After surgery, stiffness in the jaw muscles and limitation in the opening of the mouth may occur. This situation is normal and will resolve within 5 to 10 days.

J. Stitches

1. If there are stitches in the surgical area, they must be removed by your doctor after 7 to 10 days.

K. Consult your doctor in the following cases.

1. In the presence of extreme pain that you cannot control with painkillers,

2. If your bleeding continues after 24 hours despite biting the gauze as mentioned,

3. If there is a swelling that is growing even on the third day after surgery,

4. If your fever has increased,

5. If you have any questions.
